This 1800's gold-mining district was known as the Richest Square Mile on Earth. The entire area is now a National Historic District. Legalized gambling within the district also attracts many visitors to try their luck at one of several local casinos.

Mt. Evans Road

This highest paved road in North America takes you to within a few feet of the summit of Mt. Evans (14,264 feet).From Idaho Springs, CO Hwy. 5 (accessed via CO 103) provides a variety of recreational opportunities as well as breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains (closed during winter months).

At 14,110 feet, getting there is half the fun. The ascent to the top can be made either by car via the Pikes Peak Hwy. (Toll) or by train on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
