SOUTH METRO ECONOMY

South metro Denver’s business environment is summed up in two words: “strong and diverse”. The south metro Denver area has a strong base of small to medium size businesses with fewer than 250 employees, and hosts many Fortune 500 companies.

Employment- The exceptional quality of life and healthy business climate has made our area a major hub for business and industry.   The average annual salary in the south metro Denver area is in the mid $40,000’s depending on the county. Metro Denver accounts for 61% of the jobs in Colorado, with 55% of the population.  Colorado has both a highly educated, technically savvy workforce and a well-skilled labor workforce. Few other places offer both the high caliber work environments and the quality of life that can be found in south metro Denver.

The Workforce- Colorado has both a highly educated, technically savvy workforce and a well-skilled labor workforce. The state’s employment base is diversified across a broad range of industry sectors. Once primarily a mining and agricultural state, Colorado’s economy is now driven by the service industries, including medical providers and other business and professional services. Colorado’s economy also has a strong manufacturing base. The primary manufactures are food products, printing and publishing, machinery, and electrical instruments. The state is also a communications and transportation hub for the Rocky Mountain region.

Tourism-  is the second largest industry in Colorado, employing 2 00,000 people and grossing $7 billion per year. Visitors are drawn to world-class recreation and breathtaking scenery year around. Following 15 consecutive years of job growth, employment declined 1.9% in 2002 and 0.8% in 2003. Colorado’s unemployment rate in 2003 was 6.2%, compared to 6.0% nationwide. This is expected to drop to 5.8% in 2004.
As the nation works through a slow economic recovery, metro Denver is poised to lead the recovery in Colorado.
